Yさん Saki is an extraordinary music teacher with vast musical experience and is highly skilled at teaching. I have always been interested in playing Sanshin because my mother is from Okinawa. I have been taking her Sanshin lessons for 8 years and also took music theory for one year. The most fascinating element of Sanshin is its sound which is simple but beautiful and heartwarming. Once you remember the finger positions, it is more accessible compared to wind instruments and other stringed instruments. Also you need to sing along, so it makes you refresh your mind and get more energetic. Even though I’m from Japan, lyrics written in Okinawan dialect are hard to understand but Saki always explains the meaning of each word and historical background of each song. I just learned my 100th song from Saki. She’s taught me everything from traditional folk to pop songs. I have reached this far with confidence because Saki is very supportive and extremely reliable with a detailed knowledge of not only Sanshin but also whole musical genres and techniques. As a continuous learner of Sanshin, I would like to reach a deeper level of how to play and sing. I look forward to continuing my music journey with Saki and sharing beautiful Sanshin songs with other people. I've been playing sanshin under Saki's tutelage for about 8 months now, and in a relatively short period of time I've gotten good enough that people compliment me on my playing. Saki has perfect pitch, so when I make the slightest mistake when playing, she notices it right away, which makes me all the more motivated to improve. Saki always teaches in a detailed way, from how to play the song on sanshin to the meaning of the lyrics (which often are in Okinawan dialect), and not only does she teach the songs but since she knows quite a bit about Okinawa you can pick up a lot about the culture, history, etc. I always look forward to an interesting and fun lesson every week. I definitely would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn sanshin! Gさん 私は二年間さき先生に三線を教えて貰いました。知識豊富に有る先生だけでなくて、とても面白い人でもあります。二年間楽しく勉強が出来て、もしまたニューヨークに帰ったら、再び教えて貰うつもりです。 I studied sanshin under Saki Sensei for two years. Not only is she knowledgable about the sanshin and the music of the Ryukyus, but she's also a really fun person to study under. If I move back to NYC, I definitely plan on studying with her again! 大学の卒業旅行で行った沖縄。一目で恋に落ちました。長い歴史を感じずにはいられない壮大で厳かな自然、今なお傷跡を残す世界大戦の過去、それらを全て受け止めて尚キラキラの笑顔で迎えてくれる心の優しい島の人。そんな島の魅力が、沖縄の音楽にはぎゅっと詰まっています。アストリアのとある1BRアパートの一室、耳を澄ますと聞こえてくる三線の音色。私の『沖縄』はここにもありました。 When I went to Okinawa for the first time, I immediately fell in love with its nature and people. Then I realized what makes Okinawa this beautiful is the fact that it has got through a lot of sadness but never given up smiling. This mentality has remained at the core of me ever since, and is still there even after I moved to NY. Ryukaji is somewhere that I can share my Okinawa spirits at. It's just a normal apartment in Astoria where I take lessons. But it means a lot to me. Having music lessons with Saki Taguchi-Brooks is quite a delight!
Just when I think I'm getting comfortable, she tosses me what one might call a curve ball, so that I am constantly challenged and am given the impetus to do better to realize my potentials. As such making music with her is exhilarating. I am 47 years old. I've never played any musical instruments before I met Saki. Many other instructors think I am too old and don't want to teach me seriously. Saki is different. She is patient with adults. I can read scores and finished many songs within first year of learning with her.
