WHAT IS SANSHIN?Sanshin was once a courtly instrument used to entertain royalty from Okinawa (or "Ryukyu" in the native language). When the Ryukyu dynasty fell in the 1800's, Sanshin became an instrument of the common people. It now has a rich legacy of folk music, and is featured in many modern Japanese pop songs.
For students who take a serious interest in Sanshin, I also teach Okinawan language and cultural studies. |
